Tour of Scotland Part 1

We kick off Michaelmas as usual with our Tour of Scotland but other than previous years will we host two ToS tastings this term. This is meant to show you whisky diversity within one region. The first tasting will take you to the Highlands, Speyside and Islay, the more well-known whisky regions of Scotland. In the second tasting you’ll try whiskies from the Lowlands, Islands and Campbeltown; regions one considers to be more niche in terms of whisky. For the full Scotch experience, we recommend that you attend both events.

Bargain Whisky

Throughout this year’s events we’ve presented a huge range of whiskies from around the world, and each has provoked a reaction from you when you’ve experienced it. That might have been delight, or indifference or a desire to stop drinking it. And then we’ve told you the price of the bottle and some of you might have gone immediately online to buy one, popped down to the Wine Merchant’s to exercise your member’s discount, or sat there in shock at how much someone expects you to pay for what you’ve just tried.

Well, with tasting we’re taking a slightly different approach to the line up. It’s not a regional theme, or a flavour theme, but a economic theme. The opposite of our Premium tasting, we’ll be enjoying some whisky bargains, with the ticket price reduction to match.

Our aim is to prove that you don’t have to spend a fortune to enjoy a dram!

English Whisky 2022

Event Cancelled – Tickets will be refunded

Original event postponed – Please note the new date below
Tickets purchased for the original event remain valid

There hadn’t been any whisky production in England for over a century when, in 2009, the English Whisky Co bottled their first single malt. Now, 13 years on, there are 26 distilleries at various stages of operation. Unlike Scotland, there are no specific regional variants and unlike Ireland there’s no predominant single style.  The history of English whisky is being written and reclaimed, so join us to taste the state of the nation.

Irish Whiskey 2022

It is said that the origins of the word whiskey come from the old Irish Gaelic Uisce Beatha, meaning ‘water of life.’ Once the most widely drunk spirit in the world, Irish Whiskey (spelt with an ‘e’) has a history and a cultural significance that not many beverages can boast. Expressions come in a few varieties; whether it be malt whiskey, grain, single or blended, Irish whiskey is typically light and floral, with a uniquely pleasant cereal characteristic which not only sets it apart from other regional expressions but also provides a special connection to the terroir and heritage of Ireland. We look forward to seeing you at this tasting.

Sláinte! (Cheers)

Plantation Rum 2022

As a special treat, out of term time, we’ll be hosting a tasting from the people at Plantation Rum. Around since the 90’s, the drive behind the company is to pair superior rums from the Caribbean with the expertise of fine spirit crafting from the Cognac producing regions of France.
We’ll be joined by brand ambassadors for the evening to guide us through a selection of their rums from both the core and specialist ranges. We will also be choosing some chocolates from a local Cambridgeshire source to pair as an extra Easter bonus. This is another tasting where we are able to give all ticket proceeds (after chocolate) to a local charity as well.

Premium 2022

Our premium tasting has been one of this society’s best events for a good number of years now. It gives us all a chance to try some whiskies that we wouldn’t normally even think about buying. Bumping up the value of the whisky means we have to bump up the ticket prices, but nobody has complained about the experience yet!
Our definition of premium is based on the price, but the committee comes together to find and present whisky that costs more because of it’s rarity, age or providence. I’m predicting 6 very special examples of Scottish whisky covering a good range of what’s available to nose and taste and talk about.

European Whisky 2022

It is probably fair to say that Europe is one of the most culturally diverse regions on this planet. The result of this is a multitude of different cooking styles, local traditions and customs, but many regions also produce their own drinks such as beer, wine and spirits. Hence, it is not surprising that some of them also have discovered the art/science of whisky distillation quite often incorporating some twists and tweaks from spirits more native to the region in their final dram.  In this tasting, we are going to explore some of the variety of European whisky and hope to discover some unique drams from the continent.

Rye and Bourbon 2022

Rye and bourbon whiskies are differentiated from scotch whisky by a few things, but a big one is the grains that are used in their production. Come and see what effect changing that basic ingredient has on a variety of samples from North America. We hope you’ll find some styles you love and learn some more about what makes these whiskies different beyond their recipes.
Although bourbon has to come from the USA, the same isn’t true for rye whisky. However, to give this tasting some focus we will be focusing on the North American continent. But keep your eyes peeled in our upcoming European tasting too.

Mackmyra 2022

The first tasting of Lent will be dedicated to one single distillery: Mackmyra. Mackmyra is a Swedish distillery and was founded in a small village near the city Gaevle in 1998. They established themselves as innovative whisky distillers and continue to do so.  For instance, they collaborated with Microsoft to come up with the first AI-generated whisky recipe, and they also experiment with uncommon types of maturing such as using Swedish berry wine casks. This tasting will be hosted by two of Mackmyra’s brand ambassadors and we will taste six of their drams, allowing us to explore the wide range of the distillery. The event is sponsored by Mackmyra, which enables the society to reduce the ticket prices by £5 and furthermore, all profits of this tasting will be donated to a local charity.

Christmas 2021

I know it’s November, but we have to work with the calendar, so Christmas is coming early to our society! For us, that means a tasting that’s heavy on the sherry influence and winter editions, and some smoke from that warming fireside. We’ll also have some festive snacks to enjoy alongside the drams.
Join us to bring an incredible term of tastings to a close.
