Bargain

This is the evil twin of the premium tasting! We want to show you the best possible bang for the lowest possible buck but don’t worry, you’re not just getting supermarket-shelve whiskies with Clubcard prices. Bargain hunting is not always a given but we’ll give you some useful tricks where to spot the best deals. And because we spend less money on the whisky, you will also spend less money on the ticket. A real bargain!

Caskmates

The cask is the most crucial element in what gives a whisky its taste but it is not only the wood that is important in the ageing process but also what the cask had been filled with previously. For this tasting we want to juxtapose a whisky and the spirit that was used in the whisky’s cask. For example, if the whisky was aged in a sherry cask, we’ll serve you a sherry along the whisky; if you’re getting a port-finish whisky, you’ll get a port along with it, etc. We won’t be serving six whiskies that night as that would be a bit much but you’ll get four whiskies, and four of its caskmates.

Starward

Join us for a night with Turtle Higgins, Starward Whisky Ambassador, as we take a journey through Australian single Malt and discover what whisky can be. Starward is a uniquely Australian Whisky, born and bred in Melbourne. Having been named the most awarded Whisky Distillery of 2022, they have pioneered a distinctly Australian Whisky that is matured exclusively in Australian wine casks and aged in the Melbourne climate, notorious for its four seasons in a day.  Starward take the unconventional approach to hire brewers and winemakers to craft their whisky. This fresh approach to whisky making challenges whisky conventions and enables them to create interesting whiskies that celebrate innovation and the place from which it calls home.

Premium

The Premium tasting has so far been the yearly highlight for CUWAS where every committee member picks up a bottle of whisky that would punch far too much of a big hole into their wallet. Obviously, that comes with an increased ticket price. The notion of premium reflects the price of the bottle which means these whiskies are rarer or older than what we usually present at our tastings.

Billy Abbott Does Scotch

There is a fair amount of food on his Instagram, and he does have a second just for the coffee he’s drunk, but what Billy Abbott really knows about is whisky. He started blogging in 2009 and 2 years later he left his computer programming job behind to start work full-time at The Whisky Exchange where he shares his love of whisky in words and reviews and presentations. Outside of that, he’s an author, event host, awards judge, and his alcohol interests extend around the world and beyond whisky.

He’s presented tastings for us before, and he always brings a fantastic selection of whiskies rivalled only by the anecdotes and insider tales he can share. This time, he’ll be showcasing some of the latest Scotch releases from The Whisky Exchange that have caught his eye. Definitely a night not to be missed!

Blind Tasting

Some of you might be familiar with blind wine tastings, happening regularly in Cambridge. For the very first time, we will apply that concept to whisky. You will be served six whiskies, and for a change, we won’t give you any information about them. From the tasting notes, we will let you guess the cask, region/country, and, potentially, grain. We’ll keep the line-up relatively straightforward (which by no means implies a sacrifice in quality), so everyone can try out their nosing and tasting skills.

International

While you might know American, Japanese or Swedish whiskies, for this year’s international tasting we take you on a real world tour, covering every continent (bar Antarctica) to give you some very different interpretations of what whisky can be. Some of these whiskies will differ radically from Scotch, while others stick tightly to the rules. You will experience how locality can affect whisky making. Join us for the first tasting of Lent and experience some truly international whiskies.

Bridgemas

For those who cannot wait for Christmas and winter flavours to unfold, Bridgemas is the ideal opportunity to do so roughly a month ahead. And so the term’s final tasting will consist of sweet and warming whiskies which we will serve with traditional British Christmas sweets but also non-christmassy nibbles. This is also an opportunity how whisky pairs with food and for you to find out what sweets suit your whisky tasing experience best.

Crazy Cask

A crucial element which gives a whisky its taste is the cask it is aging in. Whilst sherry and bourbon casks are the classics one encounters, we’ll introduce you to some more experimental cask approaches. These could be rum, port, or wine casks, only to mention a few, with new experimentations appearing every year. At this tasting you will expand your repertoire of flavours a whisky can bring to your palate, nose, and eyes.

Tour of Scotland Part 2

We kick off Michaelmas as usual with our Tour of Scotland but other than previous years will we host two ToS tastings this term. This is meant to show you whisky diversity within one region. The first tasting will take you to the Highlands, Speyside and Islay, the more well-known whisky regions of Scotland. In the second tasting you’ll try whiskies from the Lowlands, Islands and Campbeltown; regions one considers to be more niche in terms of whisky. For the full Scotch experience, we recommend that you attend both events.
